Yes!! Worldwide Spin in Public Day!

for more info go to www.wwsipday.com

That's right! A day for everyone to spin!
(no not around in circles, although you can do that too if you want)

I don't know about the rest of you spinners but I can't wait.
Of course, since I've only been spinning for about..hmmmm....about a month and a half now, I have to make sure I don't actually drop my drop spindle!!

WWSIP Day 2009 Dates:
Worldwide Spin in Public Day is Saturday, September 19th, 2009 however if you are unable to attend a spin in public event on this date, we (the folks who started this) would like to extend the invitation to September 18th through September 20th, 2009.

The website (link above) also has info on hosting and/or finding a "sip".

I've been meaning to try this....making recycled Tshirt Yarn

pic found at thecraftbegins.com/wordpress

Hmmm...I wonder if I can consider this a form of spinning???
I mean, it is making your own "yarn".
Well, maynot....not spinning that is.
But it would be fun and really colorful.
Goodness knows it's easy enough to come by tshirts.
I really need to get on this. It just seems like there's always other stuff to do.

Okay...I want one! ...or maybe two =P

The vid below is a demo for the Mother Marion Spinning....Spindle?
I've also seen it called a kick spindle.
It's not really a spinning wheel just kind of a big spindle but I like the way it works.

Ooops! I forgot to say that the kick spindle used in the vid is made by HeavenlyHandspinning.com
It's called "Little Meggie" and is made of oak. The price is $45...very affordable!

This Mother Marion's Kick Spindle I found at Woolery.com . It's $98 (also affordable) and $24 for extra spindles.

This is the True Creations Kick Spindle. I haven't found a price for it yet but it is beautiful. You can find out more about it at TrueCreations.biz
Update: This spindle is said to cost around $500 bucks! Wow! It's beautiful but I might have to wait for this one.

Giving Spinning a Spin

Because I don't have enough stuff going on in my life (eyeroll) I've decided to give spinning a try.

Handspinning with a drop spindle. I figure it will be fun and it's portable.

Okay, and I plan to use it in my storytelling. I've found numerous stories....well I had to look really hard for them...that mention spinning or weaving and even a few that mention knitting.

A folk or fairy tale that mentions crocheting is unheard of.

But if anyone knows of one PLEASE let me know! I would love to cover a variety of crafts using yarn and or thread.

Well, I'm off to the yarn store!
Tootles!!

Okay, so I finally joined Ravely.com and folks are right.....this place can be completely addictive!!
So, I put up info on some of my project...more than I have here...and if I ever get the cam to work right I will put up pics.

I still have a few more projects to put up:
My crocheted dolls
My scrumble....which has progressed some
and some other random stuff.

Any BTW, I am on Ravelry as ScrumblingAlong.
Later I'll figure out how to put my name on that flashing thingy!

Crochet, Math and the Environment

I love Tedtalks!!
And when I saw this one I had to share it....

About this talk
Margaret Wertheim (and her sister) leads a project to re-create the creatures of the coral reefs using a crochet technique invented by a mathematician -- celebrating the amazements of the reef, and deep-diving into the hyperbolic geometry underlying coral creation.

My First Scrumblings

At last!!
Here are a few pics of my scrumbling.
Truthfully, I haven't worked on this piece in weeks. As I have mentioned before, I tend to get side tracked by other projects and sometimes just by life in general.
In this case it's both.....I started a new (arrrgh!) job a few weeks ago aaaaand I have been making crocheted dolls.
Well, to be precise I have crocheted quite a few of the basic doll shapes in lots of different yarns ( I have about 10 so far but haven't really put them together and given them personality, that will come a little later.).

Anyhoo, here are the pics.
The colors that I used are waaaaay brighter than they appear here. I used the computer camera. I really have to get a digital camera soon.
Also, please excuse the "shakiness" of the pictures.

I have noooo idea where this is going but I will make something out of this....really!!

I Need More YARN!!!

That's it.
That's all I have to say.
I'm desperate. This has become an addiction.
There are never enough colors or textures.
I may have to get a second job to support my habit.
Sigh.........

A Little Off Task

Yes, I know, I was supposed to be scrumbling.
That's what this blog is supposedly about.
I should just admit it now.
I have a tendency to go off on a tangent. Sometimes waaaaay off.

This time I didn't do too bad.

I have been crocheting and I have done a few pieces, small ones, in preparation for some serious scrumbling.

Unfortunately, while online I found a pic of a crocheted collar that another crocheter had done and I loved it!

So, of course, I had to try it.
Not too far off course.

I found a pattern that was similar but in the long run I just ran with it and did what seemed like a good idea.

Here are the results.

Now back to my bumbling scrumblings!!

So, what is Scrumbling, anyway??

scrumble (plural scrumbles)
A small piece of freeform crochet or knitting that can be joined to make a larger piece of freeform work.
definition from Wiktionary

pic found @ woolandtea.com
Scrumbling is the name of the small motifs that often make up a freeform project. The term was coined by freeform movement founders Sylvia Cosh and James Walters in the 1970's. These small motifs are made using various stitches to form different shapes. The best part of making scrumbles is that you don't need to know any special or advanced stitches. If you crochet, use your single, half double and double crochet. If you knit, your use knit and purl stitches to get started. If you like, you can learn and add more advanced and unusual stitches later.

from article @ associatedcontent.com

I stumbled across info on scrumbling a few years back but just hadn't gotten around to doing any crocheting. But recently (last weekend) I have decided that I need to get back to crafting. I figured I would start with crocheting since I have been doing it since I was a kid (no need to name years) and it is so portable.
My next thought was "what shall I make?"
I have never really managed to make any large crochet pieces but I thought it would be fun to try out lots of stitches and especially the diffent blocks.
But what to make with them???
Then I found scrumbling again. It seems made to order. Quick, portable and somewhat free spirited. I LOVE the Idea!!!
